Quiet Lights – No More Canyons (Brutalist School remix)

Now that it’s Monday and work has kindly punched us in the face, have a listen to the remix of Brooklyn shoe gazers Quiet Lights’ “No More Canyons,” which will either make you feel fantastic or have you wallowing in introspective self-loathing.

Infusing the lushly textured and colossal guitars of “No More Canyons” with a hypnotic beat, Hsi-Chang Lin of The Brutalist School opts to bring out the haunting loneliness of the original in a stripped down minimalist version.

Cue the “It’s The Muthafuckin Remix” siren and have a listen below. Be sure to also check out the original as well if you haven’t already.

New Division - Opium [Quiet Lights Remix]

Brooklyn shoe-gaze rockers Quiet Lights have dusted the glittery sheen off of New Division’s dance-floor banger “Opium” and turned it into a slow-burning high fitting for the track’s namesake.

With dark bass lines, a moody synth line, and reverb-laced vocals coalescing and fading out, Quiet Lights’ version of “Opium” is perfect to usher in the cool days of Autumn.

Listen to the remix as well as the original below, and if you like what you hear be sure to check out Quiet Lights’ debut EP The Big Fear out on Old Flame as well as New Division’s debut album Shadows

Quiet Lights – Bar Matchless 5/13 Concert Review

I spent the better part of my Friday night enveloped in the deafening shoe gaze din of Quiet Lights, who played at Brooklyn’s Bar Matchless.

The small venue was perfect as their sound literally consumed the entire space leaving me wrapped in the middle of their miasmic swirl of guitar effects.

The band took to the stage as the culmination of an evening filled with shoe-gaze acts replete with impressive array of guitar pedals, effects, and colored lights.

With minimal banter, the band dived straight into their set powering through each song in an inward looking fashion that let their music set the tone. With their amps set on high, the band’s spiraling crescendos literally overpowered your body, flooding it with aural vibrations that left you somewhat stunned as your ears continued to ring pleasantly.

Their breathy vocals are even more beautiful in person and the hushed whispers serve as a great juxtaposition to the frequent sonic explorations and meandering guitar lines. With a thickly layered and lush dreamy sound, their performance packed an impressive emotional punch.

Featuring new songs from their forthcoming EP Big Fear as well as their previous releases like “No More Canyons,” the night proved to be hypnotizingly delightful.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Big Fear EP which is due out June 28th on Old Flame Records.

In the meantime head over to their Bandcamp to listen to their previous releases.

Quiet Lights – Simple Mechanics

Brooklyn based Quiet Lights just released “Simple Mechanics,” the first cut off their forthcoming debut EP Big Fear.

Their latest track is dreamier than ever with Yseult Tyler’s soft voice hitting your ears like a gentle breeze on a serene summer evening. But I’m quickly beginning to learn that Quiet Lights isn’t all that quiet as the track slowly builds into a squirming wall of distorted guitars and synths.

Even with the chaos, Tyler continues to sing cooly. Like the eye of a storm, her gorgeous hushed voice imbues everything with a peaceful calm despite the bedlam whirling around her.

Stream “Simple Mechanics” below or head over to bandcamp to download a free copy.

Big Fear is out on June 28th on Old Flame Records, so keep an eye out.

Quiet Lights No More Canyons 7" Review

My review of the Quiet Lights No More Canyons 7" is up on Donnybrook.

This is definitely one of my favorite new bands to emerge, so be sure to read the review and check out their 7". You can watch the video to the B-side "Break Trouble Wait Below."

Here's a quick excerpt:

Mesmerizingly beautiful, Quiet Lights’ No More Canyons 7” will haunt your mind long after it has been exorcised from your speakers. Like those lovely but oh so deadly Sirens of Homer’s Odyssey, Quiet Lights will lure you into their world with their ghostly vocals and enchanting soundscapes.

Shoegazey with an underlying malice, “No More Canyons” is full of trouble. It begins innocently enough with a few quiet strums, but the track is quickly swallowed by a monstrous wall of overdriven guitars that nearly engulf the ghostly vocals.

Despite your best attempts, only faint wisps of words, thoughts, and sentiments can be heard over the din. These indiscernible night susurrations build to a howling, miasmic swirl until everything suddenly stops, leaving only a hanging whisper in the air – the ellipsis is almost palpable.

Quiet Lights – Ablaze

The name Quiet Lights more or less sums up their quiet ghostly sound. They appear like a phantom apparition late at night with their swirling ethereal guitars and dreamy vocals. Their sound lingers in the air for a moment and hangs there delicately before gently fading away.

Ablaze is the first single from their forthcoming album and is accompanied by Twice Today, the blurred B-Side.

This Brooklyn based five piece sums up their sound best, “Quiet Lights formed in Brooklyn in 2009 through a shared love of finding beauty in layered sounds. They're drawn to light and dark landscapes, glass-bottle hazes, blurry sonic envelopes, and small batch bourbon.”

Listen below, then head over to their bandcamp to download your free copy of this digital 7”. Also up for grabs is their first release a three song sampler released in March of last year.
